This is a video that was made by one of Dr. Gibbons' sitters (Denise Cook) at the end of his life, it was made shortly before he died. It's an interesting window into his past. Dr. Gibbons was a Luddite who hated all the gadgets and computers of the modern world so it was extremely difficult to ever record him. He also was quick to notice that you were recording! At the end of his life, he stopped noticing (or caring) as much so Denise was able to capture this glimpse into his life. He also told a lot of stories from his past which were fascinating.
Some of the dates and some of the order is a little off (Gayle was born in College Station in 1969 when he was the head of the Political Science department at Texas A&M, then the family moved to Boston where he worked at Wellesley for a year, then when Gayle and Steve were ~3 and 5 years old they moved back to DC where he went to work at the Library of Congress and subsequently George Mason University) but a lot of it is correct. He speaks at length about his 5th wife Pat who he was with the longest, who was also his partner in creating the Vietnam series, and who is now finishing the final 5th volume in the series. The painting that Denise zooms in on at the end is by his daughter, Gayle. |
